Prolonged Exposure (PE) for the Treatment of PTSD
After suffering a trauma, it is not uncommon for people to experience reactions such as unwanted memories of the event, trouble sleeping, anger, and depression. For some people, symptoms such as these will go away with time. However, others may experience trauma symptoms long after the trauma has occurred. If this is the case, the person may be suffering from PTSD.
One of the most effective treatments for PTSD is prolonged exposure. PE treatment usually takes approximately 9 to 12 weekly sessions lasting 90 to 120 minutes. PE involves identifying fears, talking about the traumatic event, relaxation training, and confronting safe situations that involve memories of the trauma.
